Yo jammers, welcome to the first installment of throwback Thursdays! Starting today, every thursday I'll be posting a throwback jam of particular personal or historical significance. Im starting off with a bang with what I consider one of the most flat out beautiful songs every recorded. From avant-garde jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp's 1969 album Blasé, this take on a classic gospel tune features an incredible vocal performance from Jeanne Lee. When I was a high school weirdo I somehow got deep into free jazz (no idea), and this album has been a favorite of mine since. It's an incredibly restrained and relatively straight forward track which makes it an outlier for an intense free jazz veteran like Shepp but it still retains an openness and free feeling that really makes it special.
Always down for some deep jazz excursions :)
